Front Porch Rememberin’s

Where the elders of Appalachia share the stories they’ve carried a lifetime.
New Project_edited.jpg

Before stories were written down, they were told on front porches while neighbors rocked in wooden chairs and watched the evening settle over the mountains. Conversations moved slowly, carried by the sound of crickets, the smell of coffee, and the rhythm of everyday life in Appalachia.

Front Porch Rememberin’s is a place where we sit and listen to those kinds of stories again. Here we preserve the memories of Appalachian elders — stories of coal camps, church gatherings, hard winters, family traditions, and the everyday moments that shaped

mountain life. These voices helped build the communities we love, and their stories deserve to be remembered.

Listening to Our Elders

Through partnerships with local nursing homes and assisted living communities, Hearts of Appalachia volunteers spend time with residents who wish to share their memories and experiences. These visits are not formal interviews but relaxed conversations, much like the storytelling that once took place on front porches across the mountains.

Some memories are joyful and full of laughter, while others reflect the hardships and perseverance that shaped Appalachian life. Each conversation becomes a small piece of history that might otherwise disappear. Our goal is simple: to listen with respect and preserve the stories our elders carry before they are lost.

"Mountain Wisdom:
An Ode to Appalachian Grandparents"

In the hush of Appalachian nights,
Grandparents share their mountain lights,
Their voices soft, like a creek's slow hum,
Spinning tales of wisdom, one by one.

Beneath the stars, their stories flow,
Lessons from the hills they know,
With gentle words and knowing eyes,
They paint the world under moonlit skies.

In every line on weathered skin,
Lies the wisdom of kin to kin,
Each wrinkle holds a story deep,
A treasure trove our hearts to keep.

Through laughter, tears, and mountain air,
Their wisdom guides us, always there,
With love that spans the valleys wide,
Guiding us like the morning tide.

So let us heed their mountain lore,
For in their wisdom, we find more,
Than just the tales of times gone by,
But a legacy that helps us fly.

"Like the mountain streams that carve deep valleys, the wisdom of grandparents in the Appalachia mountains runs through generations, etching lessons of resilience and harmony into the very landscape of our lives."

"In the tapestry of life, the wisdom of our elders is the thread that weaves resilience into the fabric of the younger generation's journey. To ignore their counsel is to dismiss the map that guides us through the uncharted terrain of our own existence."

"As the flame of experience flickers in the hearts of our elders, it illuminates the path we tread. To turn a deaf ear is to deny ourselves the warmth of their stories, the light of their guidance, and the comfort of lessons learned through a lifetime of living."

"From mamaw's lips flow rivers of timeless wisdom, cascading like mountain streams, nurturing hearts for generations to come."
