Appalachian Community Cookbook Project
Appalachian recipes & stories have always lived at the heart of mountain kitchens and family traditions. From cast-iron skillets on wood stoves to handwritten recipe cards tucked inside flour tins, these dishes carry the stories of our families and the communities that raised us.
But across Appalachia, many of those same communities are facing a growing challenge: food insecurity.

In towns and hollers throughout the region, families often rely on small local food banks, church pantries, and volunteer-run meal programs. Most of these local efforts are supplied by larger regional food banks, which distribute food across multiple counties and states. Those regional networks work incredibly hard, but the need in many Appalachian communities continues to outpace the available resources.
In rural areas especially, transportation barriers, limited grocery options, and economic hardship mean that many families quietly depend on these small community pantries just to make it through the month.
This is where community can make a difference.

Hearts of Appalachia is inviting families across the region to share their favorite Appalachian recipes and the memories that go with them. These recipes will become part of a growing collection that celebrates the food traditions of the mountains.
Our long‑term goal is to create a "By Appalachia, For Appalachia" Community Cookbook — a collection of family recipes gathered from across the Appalachian region.
This is a year‑long community project, and we hope to gather recipes from kitchens, churches, coal camps, farmhouses, and family tables all across the mountains.
Every dish tells a story.
Maybe it's Grandma’s skillet cornbread, soup that fed a house full of kids after a long day, biscuits made before sunrise, or desserts that only appeared at church suppers and family reunions. These recipes are part of the living history of Appalachia.
You can participate in several ways:

Share a favorite family recipe• Tell the story behind the dish• Include a photo of the finished meal• Share an old handwritten recipe card from your family collection.
As these recipes come together, they will form a cookbook that celebrates Appalachian kitchens while also helping address the needs within our communities. When the cookbook is published, net proceeds will be donated directly to small local food banks and church pantries throughout Appalachia — the very places where neighbors help neighbors every day.
This project may take time, but preserving our food traditions and helping feed our communities makes every minute worthwhile.
This effort also connects with our Holler Help initiative. Through Holler Help, Hearts of Appalachia is organizing county‑by‑county information so families can more easily find food banks, church pantries, recovery resources, senior services, and other community programs across the Appalachian region. By combining storytelling with practical resource information, we hope to strengthen the networks that help Appalachian families put food on the table.
So, pull up a chair, grab that old recipe card, and join us at the table.
Let’s build this cookbook together — by Appalachia, for Appalachia.
We are also looking for volunteers who would like to help share this project and assist with preparing the cookbook. This may include helping spread the word in your community, gathering recipes from family members or local churches, organizing submissions, or helping document the stories behind the dishes. Community cookbooks have always been built neighbor by neighbor, and we welcome anyone who would like to be part of the process.
